Indy.rb Meetup Topics

Welcome to the Indy.rb Meetup Topic suggestion facility. Please vote on topics that you would like to see at an upcoming meetup or add one that you would like to see.

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Panel: Thoughts on measuring performance of engineering teams

If you're an engineering leader being hit up by your boss for metrics, you may find yourself in a tough position. How can you continue to push forward technical initiatives while also accurately reporting how your team is performing? Engineering leaders from a handful of companies discuss and debate the right way to track teams while encouraging a creative and open environment for engineers.

  3. Microservices on rails!

Is anyone doing this? It's be great to hear about how and how it's going. How did you break out your first microservice? How does it interact with a rails app? Stuff like that.

  6. Pairing, code reviews, and writing code with others

At the Aug 12 meetup, we talked about code reviews and some folks were excited about pairing as well. Let's have a few quick talks/discussion about writing Ruby with others: tools and strategies for collaboration.

  7. What sucks in Ruby, and why X is better in some other language

A critical look at our own tools, frameworks and idiosyncracies, and an opportunity to talk about something cool from our other favorite languages.

Bonus: We can also have fun defending our sacred cows.

  8. Reboots

What if we picked a few briefs from the last few years and had them re-presented by a more junior developer?

  10. Lets build a "has_many :through" Association

I would like to see a topic where we create a hasmany :through association in Rails 4. For example, if a doctor has many patients through appointments and appointments have dates, how do we do things like: doctor.appointments.today or appointments.today.patients.where(doctor_id: 1) ?

I have not been able to find a good example for hasmany :through.

    I found a good example of a HABTM/Rails 4 http://habtmexample.herokuapp.com/instructions

  11. Flame Wars! (High School debate style) : Semantic Markup v Pragmatic Markup

I know Pragmatism is the end goal of all of the things, but some people are anti-semantic, and I needed a name for those with that frame of thought, hence the use of Pragmatic.

  14. Arel - Just because ActiveRecord can't do it, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done...

Squeel the popular ActiveRecord extension is no longer being supported by its creator...and you don't have to be doing development with Rails for long to run into the fringes of ActiveRecord. What about those times that AR can't natively do what we want?

No Squeel....doing it with just straight text queries seems dangerous and not at all database agnostic...is there another option?

    Arel to the rescue?!

  17. Accessibility on the web with Rails

There was a talk on this topic at RailsConf. I think Anna wants to bring it to Indianapolis. :-)

  18. Indy.rb Book Club

    (Not necessarily connected to meetings.)

Via the mailing list, we organize a read-through of a programming book as a group. Perhaps a chapter a week, with an email-based discussion.

I would recommend Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby by Sandi Metz. (Selfishly, as I haven't read it despite thinking Sandi Metz is just the best.)
